Worldpay World Cup Outage Highlights Payment-System Resilience Challenges
Worldpay is a major global merchant acquirer and payment processor used by British pubs, supermarkets and online retailers for card, contactless and tokenized transactions. World Cup matches can trigger sudden surges in spending. During England’s match against Croatia at the same tournament, pub transaction volumes climbed as much as 230% above normal, meaning a single power failure can quickly escalate into a threat to merchant revenue and consumer trust.
A third-party power disruption caused Worldpay transaction authorization and tokenization requests to fail during the England-Ghana group-stage match on June 23, 2026, forcing supermarkets including Tesco and pubs to accept cash only. Records show card-payment disruptions lasted from 19:44 to 22:13 UTC, a total of 2 hours and 29 minutes. Downdetector received more than 1,000 reports after 8 p.m., and Worldpay confirmed the following day that service had been restored. The value of losses was not disclosed.
