Trezor Pushes Back on ZachXBT’s Hardware Wallet Critique

Hardware wallets are designed to keep private keys and transaction signing separate from internet-connected devices, limiting exposure to malware and remote attacks. The debate intensified after blockchain investigator ZachXBT dismissed the products as “garbage” and argued that a dedicated older iPhone could provide sufficient protection for crypto holdings. His criticism challenged a security model widely promoted for the self-custody of digital assets.

Trezor Chief Commercial Officer Danny Sanders publicly rejected that comparison, saying hardware wallets offer an isolated signing environment and an independent trust path that general-purpose consumer devices cannot fully replicate. He also argued that smartphones such as Apple’s iPhone present a broader software attack surface. Reports on the exchange did not identify a specific exploit, loss amount or affected customer, framing the dispute as a clash over security architecture rather than a newly disclosed breach.
