North America's Largest Bitcoin ATM Operator Bitcoin Depot Files for Bankruptcy Protection

6 reports · First detected 2026-05-18 · Last active 2026-05-19

Founded in 2016, Bitcoin Depot primarily operated physical kiosks that allowed consumers to buy bitcoin with cash and listed on Nasdaq in 2023. It had more than 9,000 locations worldwide as of August 2025 and led the North American market. The bankruptcy shows how scam-related controversies, state-level transaction limits and compliance costs are eroding the business model for cryptocurrency cash on-ramps.

Bitcoin Depot filed for Chapter 11 protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas on May 17, 2026. It will cease operations and sell its assets, with more than 9,000 kiosks already offline. First-quarter 2026 revenue fell 49.2% year on year, while the company posted a net loss of $9.5 million, compared with a $12.2 million profit a year earlier. Nasdaq suspended trading in its shares and warrants from May 26.

Bitcoin Depot to Require ID for All Crypto ATM Transactions2026-02-25 · 1 reports · similarity 0.83

Bitcoin ATMs allow consumers to buy cryptocurrency with cash, but their irreversible transactions have long been exploited by fraud rings, prompting tighter regulation across U.S. states. Bitcoin Depot, the largest U.S. operator, runs 9,019 machines. As of February 2026, the United States had 31,360 machines, accounting for 78% of the global total. The company also reached a $1.9 million settlement with the Maine attorney general in January.

Bitcoin Depot said on February 24, 2026, that it had begun phasing in a requirement across its U.S. network for customers to present ID for every transaction, regardless of the amount. Unlike its October 2025 policy, which required verification only for a new user’s first transaction, the new rules also cover returning customers. Before approving a transaction, the system will assess the customer, location and amount in real time for suspicious activity to prevent account sharing, identity theft and account takeovers.
