Existing Payment Rails Slow Real-Time Adoption

1 reports · First detected 2026-07-22 · Last active 2026-07-22

Real-time payments are moving beyond a pitch built on speed, offering companies tighter liquidity control, quicker reconciliation and stronger supplier relationships. A report by PYMNTS Intelligence and The Clearing House found that users of the RTP Network and FedNow value those benefits more highly after adoption. Still, cards, ACH, checks and wires remain familiar, predictable and embedded in corporate accounting and treasury systems, leaving many finance teams with little urgency to switch.

A PYMNTS analysis published June 19, 2026, cited a March 11-26 survey of 271 senior finance and payments executives. It found that 94% of businesses pay suppliers on time and 86% consider their accounts-payable operations efficient. Among RTP Network nonusers, 24% said existing methods work well enough, while 22% of all respondents ranked better ERP, accounting or treasury integration as the most important improvement. Even so, 53% plan to adopt the RTP Network within two years, including nearly 30% targeting the next six months.

Treasury Teams Wary of Adopting Real-Time Payments2026-03-04 · 1 reports · similarity 0.81

Real-time payments can help companies move funds and reconcile accounts more quickly, but treasury teams must still weigh costs, cybersecurity, liquidity management and integration with existing systems before adopting new tools. Compared with established ACH and wire transfers, companies currently view real-time payments largely as a supplementary channel for specific use cases rather than a comprehensive replacement.

The latest PYMNTS research found that only 5% of large small and medium-sized businesses have fully digitized their payments. Most treasury teams remain on the sidelines because the value of the investment is not yet clear and system integration is difficult. The report did not disclose the survey's publication date, sample size or transaction values, but said companies want vendors to demonstrate measurable results before they expand adoption.
