Meta Pursues Space-Based Solar and Long-Duration Storage to Power AI
AI model training and inference are driving up data center electricity use, while wind and solar power cannot provide round-the-clock supply because of sunlight and weather constraints. Meta is therefore pursuing both Overview Energy's orbital solar technology and Noon Energy's ultra-long-duration energy storage to support its next-generation AI infrastructure. Meta has signed contracts for more than 30 GW of clean energy to date.
On April 27, 2026, Meta said it had reserved up to 1 GW of space-based solar capacity from Overview Energy, with the first orbital demonstration scheduled for 2028. It also reserved up to 1 GW/100 GWh of storage capacity from Noon Energy, capable of supplying power for more than 100 hours. A 25 MW/2.5 GWh demonstration project will be built first and is expected to be completed in 2028. Financial terms were not disclosed.
