Investment scams represented the largest category by value, underscoring the continued threat from fraudulent trading platforms and schemes promising unusually high returns.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said cryptocurrency has become an important tool for online fraud because transactions are fast, cross-border and difficult to reverse. The FBI’s latest report showed that Americans lost $11.4 billion to cryptocurrency scams in 2025, a record and a 22% increase from 2024. Victims aged 60 and older accounted for nearly half of the losses. Total U.S. losses from all forms of online fraud exceeded $20 billion that year, with AI and automated bots further amplifying the scale of the crimes.
