Fintechs Make Credit Histories Portable Across Borders
An estimated 281 million people were international migrants in 2020, according to the United Nations. Yet credit files remain largely national, forcing newcomers with years of repayment history to start again as thin-file or credit-invisible borrowers. The gap can raise barriers to housing, cards and loans while depriving banks of potentially creditworthy customers, making portable financial identity a growing test of inclusion and underwriting.
Nova Credit is tackling the problem through its consumer-permissioned Nova Passport, which translates roughly 2 billion overseas credit profiles into standardized reports in real time. Its bureau integrations span more than 20 countries and provide access to as many as 2.8 billion records, supporting lenders including HSBC. The company raised $50 million at a $300 million valuation in February 2020; its expanding data network shows how cross-border credit portability is moving from a niche service toward financial infrastructure.
