U.S. Air Force Orders Contractors to Remove All Anthropic Services by September

The U.S. Department of Defense has recently launched a stringent review of generative artificial intelligence services over supply-chain security and work related to defense contracts. The Air Force Research Laboratory, a core U.S. military research and development unit, has ordered a complete ban on products from AI unicorn Anthropic to guard against potential national security vulnerabilities. The move marks an escalation in the military’s restrictions on commercial AI and highlights the complex challenge of removing AI from its supply chain.

The Air Force Research Laboratory has issued an urgent notice directing contractors to remove all Anthropic services by September 1, ahead of the Pentagon’s deadline. However, identifying and removing AI technology embedded invisibly in underlying systems while keeping operations running will be extremely difficult. Anthropic has also formally launched legal action challenging the ban, adding uncertainty to the removal effort.
