Hitachi Energy Invests $300 Million to Expand Transformer Output
Artificial intelligence and cloud computing are driving rapid growth in data-center electricity consumption, adding to demand created by grid modernization and renewable-energy connections. Transformers have become a critical bottleneck because large electrical equipment requires long lead times and specialized manufacturing capacity. Expanding supply is therefore essential not only for utilities but also for technology companies seeking to bring power-intensive AI infrastructure online.
Reports on Aug. 18 said Hitachi Energy will invest $300 million to expand its transformer plant in Hefei, China, increasing output to ease global supply constraints. Parent Hitachi also raised its full-year consolidated revenue and profit forecasts, citing strong orders at its power-grid business. The revisions show how spending on AI and data centers is translating into sustained demand for transformers and other grid equipment.
