Musk's Orbital AI Data Center Plan Faces Seven Major Bottlenecks
AI models are driving a surge in demand for electricity and cooling. SpaceX proposes moving computing capacity into orbit aboard solar-powered satellites and combining the system with xAI and Starlink to ease pressure on terrestrial data centers. The network could grow to 1 million satellites and add 100 gigawatts of computing capacity annually. If realized, it would reshape cloud infrastructure and the launch market.
SpaceX expects deployment to begin as early as 2028. Speaking at the Cisco AI Summit on February 3, 2026, AWS CEO Matt Garman said existing rockets were insufficient and uneconomical. Experts also identified server weight, latency of 5–10 milliseconds, energy supply chains, heat dissipation in a vacuum, maintenance and upgrades, and orbital congestion as bottlenecks. Google estimates launch costs would need to fall below $200 per kilogram, a target that may not be reached until around 2035.
