Google Weighs Buying CXMT Memory for Next-Generation TPU Demand
Google’s Tensor Processing Unit is a proprietary AI accelerator, and its next generation is expected to increase data-center demand for DRAM. Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron currently dominate the global memory market. Adding China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies, or CXMT, as a supplier could help Google diversify supply risks and gain negotiating leverage, but could also draw scrutiny under US restrictions on China’s semiconductor industry and national-security reviews.
As of July 20, 2026, market reports said Google was evaluating purchases of DRAM from CXMT. Outside observers have linked the potential orders to its next-generation TPUs, saying they could disrupt the supply landscape dominated by the three leading memory-chip makers. Google and CXMT have not disclosed a contract value, order volume, product specifications or delivery dates, however, and official confirmation is still needed to determine whether a transaction will proceed.
