Newsrooms Expand AI Use as OpenAI Renews Funding
News publishers are turning to generative AI as shrinking local-news resources and pressure on advertising revenue force them to do more with less. OpenAI’s partnerships with the Associated Press, Financial Times, Le Monde and Prisa Media span translation, data mining, archive search, audience tools and business operations. The push matters because automation can free journalists for original reporting, but newsrooms still need human oversight to protect accuracy, editorial accountability and audience trust.
The latest step came on July 21, 2026, when the American Journalism Project said OpenAI would invest an additional $5 million over two years and provide $3 million in service credits to expand its Product & AI Studio. The program supports organizations reaching more than 100 communities across 38 U.S. states. A four-newsroom cohort increased year-end donations by 30% after using AI to improve fundraising workflows, while Wisconsin Watch estimated a sixfold time saving for each AI-assisted fact brief.
