Google Play Adds Venmo as Payment Option

1 reports · First detected 2026-08-11 · Last active 2026-08-11

Venmo, the U.S. digital wallet owned by PayPal Holdings, began as a peer-to-peer transfer and bill-splitting service but has increasingly been positioned for merchant checkout. PayPal said in June 2025 that Venmo served more than 64 million U.S. accounts each month. Adding the wallet to Google Play extends Venmo into recurring and high-frequency digital purchases while giving Google’s app marketplace another alternative to cards, PayPal, carrier billing and gift balances.

Google on Aug. 10, 2026, added Venmo as a payment option for U.S. Google Play users. Once an account is linked, customers can fund purchases with their Venmo balance or connected bank accounts and cards, covering apps, games, add-ons, subscriptions, in-app purchases and other digital content. Google and PayPal did not disclose financial terms. The rollout builds on existing momentum: PayPal said Pay with Venmo total payment volume rose more than 50% year on year in the first quarter of 2025.

Venmo Expands P2P Payments to 90 Markets Through PayPal Network2026-03-24 · 2 reports · similarity 0.80

Venmo was originally focused on the U.S. market and became part of PayPal when the company acquired Braintree for $800 million in 2013. As demand for cross-border transfers has grown, closed payment apps have often forced users to exchange account details or switch services. Linking the two wallets is central to PayPal’s effort to turn Venmo from a bill-splitting app into a global gateway for peer-to-peer payments.

On March 23, 2026, Venmo announced that a new link to parent company PayPal would allow users to send and receive domestic and cross-border payments using a mobile phone number. The service connects them with hundreds of millions of PayPal users across 90 markets and displays currency-conversion costs and applicable fees before a transaction. PayPal is also waiving international transfer fees until August 24, 2026, calling the move Venmo’s largest expansion of market availability since its launch.
