Real-Time Payouts Reshape Healthcare Insurance Competition
Instant deposits and peer-to-peer transfers have reset consumer expectations for when money should arrive, making healthcare reimbursements that take five to seven days increasingly conspicuous. A PYMNTS Intelligence report produced with Visa Direct argues that payout speed, reliability and visibility now shape the member experience after a claim is resolved. Disbursement infrastructure is therefore becoming a competitive capability for insurers, not merely a back-office function.
PYMNTS reported on Sept. 1, 2026, that about 82% of healthcare insurers rely at least partly on third-party payment processors, while only roughly one-quarter directly control the payment methods those vendors use. Nearly two-thirds named integration between claims and payment platforms as their top modernization priority, and more than 60% were pursuing improvements. The report specified no claim amount, but said faster payouts also require identity checks, fraud controls, accurate credentials and continuously updated data.
