DOJ Deploys 500 Prosecutors to Combat Government Program Fraud

Fraud targeting US federal benefits, healthcare, procurement and relief programs has become a major drain on public finances. The Government Accountability Office estimates that the federal government loses hundreds of billions of dollars to fraud each year, underscoring the scale of the problem and the difficulty of policing complex schemes that divert taxpayer funds from intended recipients.

The Department of Justice said it will assemble a team of about 500 prosecutors and attorneys by Aug. 24 to pursue fraud against federal government programs. The deployment is intended to expand investigative and enforcement capacity, trace sophisticated financial transactions and recover misappropriated public money, marking a significant escalation in the government’s response to financial crime involving federal funds.
