AI Agents Speed Up Corporate Treasury Decisions
Corporate treasury teams have traditionally relied on staff to consolidate bank balances, payment schedules and market data before deciding how to fund accounts, hedge currency exposure or deploy excess cash. Autonomous AI agents could compress that process by monitoring intraday liquidity, forecasting foreign-exchange risk and optimizing cash flows. The shift matters because treasury decisions are time-sensitive, though adoption will depend on governance, explainability and clear accountability for automated actions.
Recent research by the Bank for International Settlements and the Bank of Canada found that generative AI agents based on the ChatGPT o3 model could accurately replicate expert treasury decisions in a simulated wholesale payment system. The result suggests the technology is advancing beyond analysis and recommendations toward more autonomous execution. The research did not disclose live transaction values or a corporate deployment date, leaving the findings as evidence from a controlled simulation rather than a production rollout.
