SpaceX Wins $4 Billion Space Force Contract to Help Build Golden Dome AI Satellite Defense System

Golden Dome is a missile and air defense system planned by the U.S. government. It is designed to integrate low-Earth-orbit satellite sensing, global target tracking and AI-powered analysis into an early-warning network. The U.S. Space Force aims to use the system to reduce its reliance on crewed reconnaissance aircraft. SpaceX is contributing its rocket, Starlink and Starshield capabilities, signaling an expanded role from commercial launch provider to supplier of defense space infrastructure.

The U.S. Space Force announced on May 29, 2026, that it had awarded SpaceX a $4.16 billion Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indication (SB-AMTI) contract to build a satellite constellation capable of tracking and targeting airborne threats worldwide. The goal is to establish an initial capability by 2028. The contract also added defense-order backing to SpaceX's IPO plans as the company sought a valuation of about $1.8 trillion.
