U.S. State Department Unveils Open-Source Freedom.gov App

China’s Great Firewall and Iran’s repeated internet shutdowns have made censorship-circumvention tools a key part of Washington’s digital-freedom policy. The U.S. State Department is positioning Freedom.gov as a global, open-source service that can help users reach blocked news, social media and other online content. The initiative extends earlier U.S. support for VPNs and related technologies in countries where governments restrict access to the global internet.

The State Department said on February 20, 2026, that it had finalized Freedom.gov and planned to roll it out within weeks as a one-click desktop and mobile application compatible with iOS and Android. Officials said the service would not retain IP addresses, session data, browsing activity, DNS queries or device identifiers. The department has not disclosed the app’s underlying technical architecture or development cost, leaving its resilience against government blocking measures untested.
