Google co-founder Sergey Brin has stepped back into a hands-on role in the company’s artificial-intelligence efforts as generative AI reshapes search, cloud computing and software development. The intervention underscores the strategic importance of Gemini, Google’s flagship model, as the Alphabet unit faces sustained pressure from OpenAI and Anthropic to improve model performance and defend its position in the next major computing platform.

Brin has recently been overseeing internal AI teams and directing Google to concentrate key talent and computing resources on improving Gemini, including work on “recursive self-improvement” techniques.
