Ethereum Faces Make-or-Break 2026 as Scaling, Quantum and AI Pressures Converge
Ethereum’s shift toward using Layer 2 networks to scale transactions has increased throughput and lowered fees, but it has also fragmented assets, liquidity and the user experience. Questions raised by co-founder Vitalik Buterin have made the network’s scaling strategy, quantum-computing security and AI applications central issues that could define its future role.
In early 2026, Buterin publicly called for a reassessment of the Layer 2 roadmap, focusing on cross-chain fragmentation and insufficient value accrual to the mainnet. At the same time, the Ethereum community is advancing preparations for quantum-resistant cryptography and expanding work on AI agents and onchain infrastructure. The discussions have not produced specific investment figures or upgrade dates, but they are already shaping Ethereum’s long-term technical roadmap.
