Succinct Launches Zcam to Verify iPhone Photos

Generative AI has made convincing fake receipts, delivery records and news images cheaper to produce, raising the value of tools that establish where digital media came from. Cryptography company Succinct is addressing that problem with Zcam, an iPhone camera app that creates verifiable provenance at capture. The approach shifts authentication away from after-the-fact detection models, which can be unreliable, toward hardware-backed signatures attached to the original photo or video.

Succinct launched Zcam on April 23, 2026. The app hashes raw image data, signs it with keys generated inside Apple’s Secure Enclave and embeds the signature, capture metadata and device attestation under the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, or C2PA, standard. The tamper-evident record lets recipients check whether a file has been altered and helps distinguish signed camera captures from AI-generated media. Zcam is available free on Apple’s App Store for iPhone, with the listing showing a download size of 96.1 MB.
