Wikipedia relies on volunteer editors to maintain content across multiple languages, but some translators have overused large language models such as ChatGPT and Gemini without adequately checking meaning or facts, leading to more mistranslations and unnatural prose. The platform has therefore tightened its translation review standards to preserve the accuracy and credibility of its entries.

Wikipedia’s latest rules subject translators to stricter penalties than ordinary users: those who accumulate five translation errors could be suspended. The rules also restrict the use of AI to write entries directly. As of July 19, 2026, information about the measures had not disclosed a formal effective date, and no monetary amounts were involved.
