Anthropic Engineer Backs HTML Over Markdown as Best Output Format for Claude Code
Anthropic engineer Thariq Shihipar argues that Markdown should no longer be considered the best default output format for Claude Code. As models gain the ability to handle extremely large contexts, concerns about the additional tokens consumed by HTML tags are diminishing. HTML also allows technical documents to incorporate layouts, charts and interactive components, improving readability and usability.
Shihipar recently advocated using HTML's visual and interactive capabilities directly so Claude Code can produce richer technical explanations and interactive reports than Markdown allows. However, related reports disclosed neither the proposal's publication date nor benchmark token data or development costs. Anthropic has also yet to announce HTML as Claude Code's official default output format.
