SEC Enforcement Chief Margaret Ryan Resigns After Clashes Over Crypto Cases
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s enforcement division investigates and prosecutes securities fraud. Margaret Ryan was appointed to lead the division on August 21, 2025. As the Trump administration and SEC Chair Paul Atkins scaled back cryptocurrency enforcement, her positions on cases involving Justin Sun and Elon Musk became a key test of the agency’s enforcement independence.
On March 5, 2026, the SEC dropped its fraud lawsuit against Sun and three companies in a $10 million settlement. Ryan resigned on March 16 after a tenure of only about six months. Democratic Senators Richard Blumenthal and Elizabeth Warren wrote to Atkins on March 30, seeking details about internal disagreements and case records. The SEC denied making decisions on political grounds.
