AMD Pledges £5 Million in Compute Support for Oxford’s BOLD AI Lab

The British Open-ended Learning and Discovery Lab, led by the University of Oxford with researchers from University College London and Imperial College London, is designed to pursue fundamental AI that is open, resource-efficient and human-centered. On June 23, 2026, the UK government said BOLD and a second AI laboratory would share up to £60 million in public funding over six years, underscoring Britain’s push to strengthen frontier research and turn academic advances into practical applications.

AMD said on Aug. 14, 2026, that it signed a memorandum of understanding with Oxford to provide up to £5 million in computing support during BOLD’s first 18 months. Planned work includes new learning methods, discovery through multi-agent systems and adaptive physical AI. AMD and BOLD researchers will also use the company’s open software ecosystem, including ROCm, to optimize AI workloads and publish open-source research software, benchmarks and evaluation tools.
