U.S. Army Burns Through Annual AI Token Supply, Restores Limits

The U.S. Army has expanded its use of generative AI through the Army Enterprise LLM Workspace, powered by Ask Sage, giving personnel access to models including Google’s Gemini, Meta’s Llama and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The platform is designed for tasks ranging from personnel administration to operational support and is accredited for Controlled Unclassified Information. The rollout illustrates both the productivity appeal of secure AI in government and the budget and governance risks created when usage scales faster than procurement plans.

The Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command began a $49,500, one-year Ask Sage enterprise subscription in May 2026 that included 100 million tokens. After the Army chief information officer announced unlimited tokens that month, the CIO-managed pool was exhausted by mid-June, according to an internal email, forcing officials to restore limits. Staff had previously received at least 200,000 tokens a month, with automatic increases for heavy users. The rapid depletion turned an annual allocation into a roughly one-month supply and exposed weak demand forecasting.
