Microsoft Launches SQL MCP Server to Make AI Agent Data Access More Deterministic

MCP is a standard that allows AI agents to discover and invoke external tools. When enterprises let large language models translate natural-language requests directly into SQL, complex queries can contain errors that are difficult to detect. Microsoft instead uses Data API Builder’s entity abstraction layer and RBAC to govern access to tables, views and stored procedures, reducing the risk of directly exposing sensitive databases.

Microsoft released its SQL MCP Server, built on DAB 2.0, on April 8, 2026. It uses NL2DAB and a built-in Query Builder to generate T-SQL deterministically. The free, open-source offering provides a fixed set of seven DML tools, supports Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Azure Cosmos DB and MySQL, and can expose REST, GraphQL and MCP endpoints simultaneously.
