Microsoft Pursues AI Independence by 2027 With In-House Models to Reduce OpenAI Reliance

Microsoft has long worked with OpenAI to integrate generative AI into Azure, Microsoft 365 and Copilot. It has now launched a “frontier model strategy” aimed at increasing its technological independence by 2027. The initiative could reshape the companies’ partnership and determine whether Microsoft can gain greater control over model costs, product timelines and its competitiveness in multimodal AI.

Microsoft has introduced its internally developed MAI foundation models and invested in computing infrastructure powered by Nvidia GB200 chips, though reports did not disclose the investment amount or an exact launch date. The company also recently released seven AI models to expand the Microsoft Foundry lineup, advancing its goal of reducing reliance on OpenAI by 2027.
