FBI Plans $88 Million AI Infrastructure Expansion, Eyes Gemini

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is seeking to expand its in-house artificial intelligence capabilities as large language models and agentic AI move from experimentation toward operational use across the US government. The initiative underscores the infrastructure demands facing federal agencies, which must balance computing capacity and software costs with strict requirements for data security, access controls and deployment inside protected environments.

The FBI disclosed in August 2026 that it plans to spend as much as $88 million on servers and related hardware to increase its internal AI computing capacity. The bureau is also considering deploying Google’s Gemini models within its own environment under capacity-based licensing, a structure that could give the agency greater control over usage and expenses as it scales AI workloads.
