Step App Shuts Down as Move-to-Earn Boom Fades

2 reports · First detected 2026-08-06 · Last active 2026-08-06

Step App emerged during the blockchain gaming boom as a Move-to-Earn platform that rewarded users with crypto tokens for running and other physical activity. The model once attracted players and speculators by linking exercise to digital-asset incentives, but its economics depended heavily on token prices, user growth and trading demand. A prolonged downturn has since exposed the difficulty of sustaining those rewards.

Step App said it will wind down after four years of operations, with services scheduled to end by Aug. 21. Its FITFI token has plunged 99.98% from its all-time high. STEPN, widely regarded as the pioneer of Move-to-Earn, remains active, but leading tokens across the segment have fallen more than 99.8% from their peaks, underscoring how sharply investor and player interest has receded.
