OpenAI Joins Rust Foundation and Commits $1 Million to Open Source
Rust is a systems programming language focused on memory safety, performance and reliability, and is an important tool for AI infrastructure. Its nonprofit steward, the Rust Foundation, relies on corporate members to support maintainers. OpenAI had already launched the $1 million Codex Open Source Fund on April 16, 2025, offering up to $25,000 in API credits per project.
On June 17, 2026, the Rust Foundation announced that OpenAI had joined as a Platinum Member and would contribute a total of $600,000 through the foundation, covering membership dues and additional support for maintainers. The funding will support Rust Project Goals, the Rust Innovation Lab and the Maintainers Fund. OpenAI technologist Predrag Gruevski will also join the foundation's board.
