Upstage in Talks to Buy 10,000 AI Chips From AMD

Upstage is a South Korean generative AI startup, while AMD is both an investor in the company and a potential chip supplier. As demand for large language model training and inference rises, securing reliable computing capacity has become crucial for AI companies seeking to control costs, improve service performance and shorten product development cycles. The purchase could also affect Upstage’s competitiveness in South Korea and globally.

Upstage CEO Kim Sung-hoon said the company was in talks to buy 10,000 AI chips from AMD and had met AMD CEO Lisa Su in Seoul to discuss strengthening its hardware infrastructure. As of July 20, 2026, the companies had not disclosed the chip model, transaction value, signing date or delivery schedule, and the procurement plan remained under negotiation.
