HETDEX Opens 600 Million Cosmic Spectra to Public and AI
The Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment, or HETDEX, uses spectroscopy to map galaxies and probe dark energy by measuring how cosmic expansion evolved. Its observations reach back to when the universe was about 1.8 billion years old and cover “Cosmic Noon,” roughly 10 billion to 12 billion years ago. The survey gives researchers an unusually broad view of galaxy formation, stellar and gas distribution, and the large-scale structure of the early universe.
HETDEX released its complete dataset and survey catalog on June 3, 2026, opening more than half a petabyte of raw and processed material containing about 600 million spectra and measurements of more than 1 million galaxies. The project reduced key products to about 10 terabytes and is providing access through the Texas Advanced Computing Center’s JupyterLab and cloud-based computing resources. Machine-learning classifiers and automated tools helped identify galaxy candidates and remove satellite and meteor contamination, while more than 24,000 citizen scientists assisted with verification.
