Mystery Whale Burns 107 Bitcoin, Fueling Three Community Theories
Bitcoin sent to a “burn address” whose private key is inaccessible can never be spent again, effectively removing it from circulation permanently. The funds came from five addresses created in 2014 that had remained dormant for more than a decade. With Bitcoin’s supply capped at just 21 million coins, the simultaneous destruction of such a large holding prompted market participants to investigate its owner and the motive.
Blockchain monitoring platform SaniExp and Wu Blockchain reported on May 26, 2026, that five transactions had sent a combined 107 BTC to the burn address “1111111111111111111114oLvT2.” The Bitcoin was worth about $8.2 million to $8.5 million at the time. The holder remains unidentified, with the community’s main theories pointing to a quantum-computing bounty, an AI agent error or a self-destruct mechanism designed to deter coercion.
