Ripple, Kyobo Partner on Tokenized Bond Settlement in South Korea
South Korea is establishing a legal framework for tokenized securities. On January 15, 2026, the National Assembly passed amendments recognizing blockchain-based distributed ledgers as a valid means of securities registration, with the changes scheduled to take effect on February 4, 2027. The trial by Ripple and major life insurer Kyobo Life Insurance is therefore an important test case for bringing the issuance, custody and settlement of traditional government bonds on-chain.
Ripple and Kyobo Life Insurance signed a partnership agreement in September 2025 and completed reviews of the regulatory environment, stablecoin payments and tokenized bond technology. They reviewed the proof-of-concept test network at Kyobo’s Seoul headquarters on April 14, 2026, and announced the partnership on April 15. Ripple Custody will support the issuance, custody and settlement of tokenized government bonds, with the aim of shortening T+2 settlement to near-instantaneous processing. The trial amount, bond issues involved and formal launch date have not been disclosed.
