Solana Tests Quantum-Resistant Cryptography, Confronting Harsh Security-Speed Tradeoff

Quantum computers could eventually use Shor’s algorithm to break the elliptic-curve signatures used by Solana and derive private keys from public keys. Because Solana directly exposes wallet public keys, the risk extends across the network. The Solana Foundation has partnered with post-quantum security company Project Eleven to test migration options in advance. Neither party disclosed the value of the partnership.

Project Eleven said on December 16, 2025, that it had deployed post-quantum signatures on the Solana testnet. ML-DSA test results released on April 4, 2026, showed signature sizes rising from 64 bytes to 1,300–2,500 bytes, a 20- to 40-fold increase, while throughput fell by about 90%. On April 27, the Solana Foundation said Anza and Firedancer had each completed an initial, more compact implementation of Falcon.
