New Taipei Plans Second AI Recycling Plant in Xinzhuang

The New Taipei City Government is using artificial intelligence and automation to strengthen waste sorting as part of its smart-city and net-zero strategy. Automated recycling facilities can ease reliance on manual sorting, improve the identification of recoverable materials and raise reuse rates. The investment is significant for a densely populated municipality seeking to reduce pressure on waste treatment infrastructure while making its recycling system more efficient.

The city government plans to open New Taipei’s second AI-powered recycling sorting plant in Xinzhuang by the end of 2025. The facility will deploy six intelligent robotic arms alongside image-recognition technology to classify household recyclables automatically. It is expected to process 16,000 metric tons of household waste annually, expanding sorting capacity and accelerating the recovery of reusable materials.
