Real-Time Navigation Linked to Lower Alzheimer’s Mortality
Alzheimer’s disease damages the hippocampus, a brain region central to spatial memory and navigation. Taxi and ambulance drivers repeatedly plan routes and adapt to traffic in real time, potentially strengthening cognitive reserve through sustained spatial processing. The findings add to evidence that navigation-intensive activity may be associated with brain resilience, though the observational study cannot establish that either occupation directly protects against dementia.
Harvard Medical School researchers reported in The BMJ in December 2024 after examining 8,972,221 US death certificates filed with the National Center for Health Statistics from 2020 through 2022. Alzheimer’s accounted for 1.03% of deaths among taxi drivers and 0.74% among ambulance drivers, compared with 1.69% across all occupations. Separate machine-learning analysis has also linked residence in neighborhoods with more complex street networks to a comparatively lower risk of dementia.
