Shopify Says AI Search Triples Traffic and Orders
Generative AI is reshaping how consumers discover products, shifting part of the shopping journey from conventional search engines such as Google to conversational tools. Shopify views AI search as an additional discovery channel rather than a replacement for traditional search, giving its merchants another way to reach shoppers with purchasing intent. That makes AI-driven referrals an increasingly important source of traffic and sales for the e-commerce platform.
Shopify said on Aug. 5, 2026, that traffic and orders originating from AI search tools each tripled in the second quarter ended June 30 from a year earlier. Supported by AI referrals and strong transaction volumes, quarterly revenue rose 36% to $3.6 billion, exceeding Wall Street expectations. The results indicate that growing consumer use of AI shopping tools is beginning to translate into measurable commercial activity for Shopify merchants.
