CHAI Launches PULSE to Scale Generative AI in Public Health

U.S. state, tribal, local and territorial health agencies are under pressure to analyze more data and communicate faster despite constrained staff and technology budgets. Generative AI could streamline those workflows, but privacy, governance and accountability risks have slowed adoption. The clinician-founded nonprofit Coalition for Health AI, or CHAI, created PULSE — the Public health Use case and Learning Scaling Engine — to build practical experience and a repeatable path for responsible deployment.

CHAI launched PULSE on July 16, 2026, opening applications for 10 pilot jurisdictions, with testing due to begin in the fall and public playbooks expected in 2027. OpenAI and Anthropic donated 10 enterprise licenses covering as many as 2,000 public-health practitioners. CHAI’s 17-member cross-sector leadership council will work with Accenture experts on five use cases: drug-wave prediction, social-determinants mapping, community-feedback analysis, multilingual translation and FHIR-based clinical data retrieval. No program funding figure was disclosed.
