HSBC Launches HDSU to Link Blockchain and Traditional Payment Systems
Companies using blockchain to pay suppliers often face interoperability problems between networks and difficulties connecting directly to regulated fiat settlement systems, forcing them to manage cryptocurrencies or digital wallets separately. HSBC developed the HSBC DLT Settlement Utility, or HDSU, to route on-chain payment instructions to central bank settlement systems and traditional bank accounts, reducing settlement friction in cross-border supply chains.
HSBC said on July 1, 2026, that HDSU had formally gone live and received American Banker's On-Chain Finance Innovation of the Year award. Worley conducted a six-month client trial involving supplier payments, cutting payment costs by 50% and accelerating invoice processing by as much as 80%. HSBC did not disclose the value of the trial transactions and is now expanding the service to companies with high payment volumes across multiple jurisdictions.
