Taiwan Regulator Rebuts Margin-Risk Concerns After CMoney Data Halt
Taiwan investment-data platform CMoney has stopped providing historical information including margin maintenance ratios, prompting concerns that investors are losing access to a key gauge of leverage risk. The ratio measures whether collateral in margin accounts is sufficient to support outstanding credit and is closely watched for signs of forced selling. The episode has put market-data transparency and the availability of risk indicators under regulatory scrutiny.
The Financial Supervisory Commission said it had asked the Taiwan Stock Exchange to examine why CMoney halted the data service. Taiwan’s aggregate margin-account collateral maintenance ratio stood at 161.63% as of July 29, well above the 130% threshold associated with forced liquidation, the regulator said. Securities authorities are also conducting a broader review of stock-market disclosure practices and related intervention rules.
