London Robotaxi Launch Slips Amid TfL Regulatory Uncertainty

Robotaxis are a closely watched test of whether autonomous-driving technology can move from controlled trials to commercial passenger service. London is a particularly important market because of its dense, complex road network, but operators must first satisfy Transport for London, or TfL, on licensing, safety accountability and service rules. The regulator’s policy timetable therefore remains central to any launch.

The planned debut of autonomous taxi services in London has now slipped as uncertainty persists over TfL’s regulatory approach and approval process. Operators have also played down the prospect of beginning full passenger operations before the end of 2026. Testing and discussions with the regulator are expected to continue, but no revised launch date has been announced.
