Tencent Reportedly Plans Q3 WeChat AI Agent Launch to Catch Rivals

Tencent’s WeChat has a vast ecosystem of Mini Programs and payment services, but it trails Alibaba’s Qwen and ByteDance’s Doubao in generative AI applications. An AI agent capable of connecting services such as ride-hailing and food delivery through conversation could turn WeChat from a social platform into a one-stop task portal, making it a key part of Tencent’s push to catch its rivals.

Market sources say Tencent is secretly developing a WeChat AI agent that is expected to launch in the third quarter of 2026 and execute tasks such as booking rides and ordering food directly through Mini Programs. Tencent shares surged as much as 10% after the news emerged. The company also plans to double its AI investment in 2026 from 2025, though it has yet to disclose the amount or a formal launch date.
