Adyen Wins Major UK Government Contract, Replacing Stripe as Payment Provider

The UK Government Digital Service (GDS) launched GOV.UK Pay in 2016 to consolidate public-sector payments across central and local government, the NHS, police and the armed forces. The platform has processed more than £9 billion across 135 million transactions, covering 1,700 services at more than 600 organizations, making any change of payment provider significant for the government’s digital infrastructure.

On June 3, 2026, GDS named Adyen as GOV.UK Pay’s primary payment provider, replacing Stripe, with about 1,000 public services expected to migrate in phases. Adyen will process non-Crown card transactions and introduce open-banking-based Pay by Bank account-to-account payments. Officials did not disclose the contract value or a date for completing the migration.
