Domain Authority Barely Predicts Fintech Visibility in AI Search

1 reports · First detected 2026-09-01 · Last active 2026-09-01

Fintech marketers have long treated domain authority and backlinks as proxies for search strength, assuming brands that rank well on Google will also surface in generative-AI answers. That assumption matters as buyers shift their discovery process: DIGI CONVO founder Jeff Jenkins cited G2 data showing 51% of B2B software buyers now begin research with AI chatbots. If authority does not carry across, years of SEO investment may not secure a place in the shortlists produced by ChatGPT or Perplexity.

In June 2026, Jenkins tested 51 fintech and payments companies across eight verticals, using 16 unbranded category queries on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. Domain Rating explained only about 5% of the variance in AI visibility, with a correlation of 0.24. The 25 highest-authority companies averaged DR 81 but scored slightly below the 25 lowest-authority firms, which averaged DR 61. Square, despite a DR of 93, scored 31, while Sift, Remitly and Rapyd registered zero across every query and engine.
