AI 2040: Plan A Initiative Seeks to Delay AGI Until 2040
The initiative is intended to guard against the risks of AI systems escaping control and becoming monopolized. The nonprofit AI Futures Project previously warned that today’s unchecked AI race could allow a major power to secure exclusive control. Its push for safety-focused governance aims to prevent a handful of giants from monopolizing artificial general intelligence, or AGI, and could provide important guidance for global technology policy and geopolitics.
The AI Futures Project published its “AI 2040: Plan A” report on July 9, 2026, advocating that AGI’s anticipated arrival be delayed until 2040. The report sets out four pillars, including a plan to secure a U.S.-China agreement by 2029, and projects that an annual citizen dividend of $1 million per person could be distributed by 2035.
