High-Price Sale of Popular Japanese ‘Anti-AI’ X Account Sparks Trust Crisis

As generative AI has rapidly gained traction, Japan’s creator community has continued to debate copyright, training data and the risk that AI could replace creative work. The latest controversy began when an X account that had long criticized generative AI was sold, confronting the cause-driven community with trust concerns over the transfer of account control and the commercial repurposing of an established audience.

The Japanese X account had accumulated more than 11,000 followers and was recently sold for 90,000 yen. Online critics accused its owner of loudly proclaiming an “anti-AI” stance before cashing out and leaving. As of July 20, 2026, neither the actual transaction date nor the identities of the buyer and seller had been disclosed. The sale nevertheless prompted questions about the market for trading accounts and the authenticity of their stated positions.
