Amazon Unveils Digital Sustainability Strategy to Address AI Power Challenge

The generative AI boom has confronted technology giants such as Amazon with the twin challenges of expanding data-center infrastructure and managing a surge in electricity consumption. Increasing computing capacity while cutting carbon emissions and protecting environmental sustainability has become a major focus for the cloud industry and ESG investors. The issue is critical to the success of corporate low-carbon transitions and will shape the sustainable development of global digital infrastructure.

Amazon responded with a sustainability report published in 2025 that outlined three digital sustainability strategies: building a highly efficient cloud, turning the cloud into a decarbonization tool, and developing sustainable IT. The company plans to improve energy efficiency across cloud computing and data centers by developing its proprietary Trainium series of AI chips and deploying liquid-cooling technology. These measures are intended to address the generative AI power challenge and advance low-carbon operations across the business.
