Google Maps Adds Gemini-Powered Ask Maps to Bolster AI Navigation
Google Maps serves more than 2 billion users each month, drawing on Street View, aerial imagery, real-time traffic conditions and extensive place data to power search and navigation. Bringing Gemini into Maps extends generative AI beyond answering questions into place discovery and real-world travel, while making Maps a key gateway to Google’s AI product ecosystem.
Google unveiled Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation on March 12, 2026. Ask Maps lets users plan multi-stop trips in natural language, receive place recommendations and make reservations directly; it is initially rolling out on Android and iOS in the United States and India. Immersive Navigation renders buildings, lanes and terrain in 3D and is launching first in the United States, with support for CarPlay, Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in.

The history behind this eventGoogle Maps Adds AI Agents for Food Orders and Hotel Bookings
Google launched Gemini-powered Ask Maps on March 12, 2026, initially rolling it out on Android and iOS in the United States and India. The conversational tool lets users pose complex questions about destinations, routes and local businesses. Adding transaction capabilities marks a shift from recommendations to execution for a service with more than 2 billion users and data covering over 300 million places, potentially challenging food-delivery platforms, online travel agencies and ticket marketplaces for high-intent traffic.
Google said on Aug. 5 that Ask Maps would expand to more than 160 additional countries and territories, while new agentic functions would initially remain focused on the U.S. Users can ask the service to place delivery or pickup orders, book hotel rooms and search for event tickets. An optional Personal Intelligence integration can draw on Gmail and Google Calendar for reservations, schedules and preferences. Google did not disclose transaction fees or a timetable for making the full set of agentic tools available worldwide.
Google Maps Integrates Gemini With Three AI Features for Enterprise Geospatial and Image Analysis
Google Maps and Google Earth have long supported navigation, site selection and environmental monitoring. As businesses adopt AI agents, geospatial data is also becoming an important source for understanding the physical world. Google Cloud is integrating Gemini with its mapping platform so companies can directly interpret locations, buildings and changes in terrain while reducing the cost of manual analysis.
Google unveiled three Gemini AI capabilities at its 2026 Cloud Next conference: grounding with Maps imagery, automated satellite-image analysis and an Earth AI imagery model. Businesses can use them to enable AI agents to connect location and visual data, reducing geospatial tasks that once took days or weeks to just minutes.
